| There are a number of factors, which have prevented the development of consumer protection in Cyprus the past few years. These are related to cultural factors, public indifference and ignorance on consumer protection among citizens and the powerful and influential marketing campaigns inducing people to continuous, higher and more expensive level of consumption. In Cyprus there is a need to promote public awareness and active citizenship of consumers, to promote consumer education and sensitivity, especially at an early age and to provide information in an understandable language by the average consumer, on his rights and the legal framework on consumer protection and to monitor successfully the implementation of the acquis commaunaiture regarding consumer protection. Within this context, the Project 'Strengthening Consumer Protection in Cyprus: Preparing to Meet the European Challenge' was addressed to all citizens in both communities, aiming at better-educated citizens with regard to consumer protection issues, who will subsequently play a more active role in the Cyprus society promoting higher standards of quality of life. This would also have a significant impact to the quality of services provided to the tourists and other visitors to the island. The Project is funded by the Civil Society Programme of the European Union.
